The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced deep frustration over the lingering deadlock in its renegotiation efforts with the Federal Government regarding key concerns affecting lecturers and the overall state of university education in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview with newsmen in Jos, Plateau State, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the union has exhausted its patience with what he described as government’s continuous failure to act decisively, despite years of dialogue and repeated assurances.

Piwuna reiterated that ASUU’s demands remain straightforward and well-documented, pointing to the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.

The agreement covers critical issues such as the conditions of service for academic staff, autonomy and academic freedom of universities, sustainable funding, and the payment of earned academic allowances.

He stressed that the ongoing deterioration in infrastructure, the demoralisation of staff, rising cultism, and the declining quality of university education in Nigeria are all linked to the government’s neglect, which he said could only be reversed through increased funding and better remuneration for lecturers.

According to him, university teachers are no longer interested in empty promises and warned that the government must brace for the consequences of its continued inaction.
