Super Falcons one step away from 10th WAFCON Title after beating Banyana

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa, sealed by Michelle Alozie’s stoppage-time strike in Tuesday’s semifinal showdown in Casablanca.
The Nigerian side came out aggressively, applying intense pressure and nearly profiting from a fumbled freekick by Alozie early in the match.
Their persistence paid off just before halftime when a handball by Bambanani Mbane, who attempted to block Folashade Ijamilusi’s effort, resulted in a penalty.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up confidently to convert, handing Nigeria a 1-0 lead at the break.
South Africa responded in the 60th minute through Linda Motlhalo, who scored from the spot after Osinachi Ohale was penalized for a foul on Hildah Magaia inside the Nigerian box.
It marked the first goal Nigeria had conceded in the competition and gave the defending champions renewed energy.
Both sides battled hard in the second half, creating several chances. Nigeria’s Jennifer Echegini, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo all tested the South African defense, while Jermaine Seoposenwe and substitute Noxolo Cesane looked dangerous for Banyana Banyana.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie remained solid for the Super Falcons, with defenders Ohale and Ashleigh Plumptre making vital clearances to keep Nigeria in the game.
The match took a sad turn in the 84th minute when South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado suffered a severe leg injury while challenging for a set piece.
The emotional moment saw teammates in tears and Nigerian fans chanting her name in a show of support.
With extra time approaching, Nigeria found a breakthrough.
Alozie’s deep cross created confusion in the South African box. Although Deborah Abiodun didn’t make a clean connection, her presence unsettled goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
Fikile Magama failed to clear the danger, allowing the ball to slip into the net for the decisive goal.
