As Nigeria’s Super Falcons prepare to face host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat, President Bola Tinubu has urged the team to bring the trophy home, declaring that the entire nation is solidly behind them.

In a personally signed message, President Tinubu hailed the team’s resilience and outstanding performance throughout the tournament, stating that they have brought honour to the country on and off the pitch.

“My beloved Super Falcons, tonight, you stand at the cusp of history as you face the host nation, Morocco, in the 2024 WAFCON final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

Your performance at this tournament over the past three weeks has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength,” Tinubu wrote.

The President particularly commended the team for their gesture of solidarity towards Gabriela Salgado of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who sustained an injury during the semi-final.

He described the act as a reflection of true African compassion and unity.

“If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” he added, citing the team’s unbeaten run, dominance in the knockout stages, and record of conceding only one goal so far.

President Tinubu also revealed that he has dispatched a high-powered presidential delegation to Rabat to represent the government and cheer the Falcons to victory.

The delegation includes Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.

He thanked the players’ families, coaches, fans, the Nigerian community in Morocco, and all who have supported the team, expressing confidence in a victorious outcome.

“You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you. I look forward to receiving the team, the trophy, and the officials in Abuja,” the President concluded.
