NUJ FCT targets Secondary School Students for early journalism mentorship

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has unveiled plans to revive and strengthen press clubs in secondary schools across Abuja as part of efforts to groom future ethical and professional journalists from an early age.
During an interactive session held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Garki, the NUJ FCT Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndababo, who represented the council, emphasized the importance of building strong journalism values among students.
“Our goal is to promote professionalism from the grassroots by empowering students with journalistic skills and values early on,” he said.

The Press Club Revival Project is scheduled to be officially launched on Thursday, July 24, 2025, starting with two pilot schools in the Federal Capital Territory.
Comrade Yahaya noted that the initiative is a vital step in preparing the next generation of journalists to uphold ethical standards and contribute meaningfully to media and society.
Welcoming the initiative, the Matron of the GSS Garki Press Club, Mrs. Udofia Emauwa Unyime, described it as a “timely and visionary effort” that will inspire students and reignite interest in journalism.
The project is a major highlight of the 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week, which aims to promote press freedom, media development, and civic responsibility while fostering a culture of grassroots journalism.

This year’s press week is themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy, and the Society.”
