Media Is Watchdog of Society — Al-Makura accepts role as NUJ FCT Press Week Chairman

Former Governor of Nasarawa State and distinguished Senator, Tanko Umaru Al-Makura (OON), has been named Chairman of the 2025 Press Week organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.
Senator Al-Makura made this known on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the NUJ FCT executive council, where he accepted the invitation to chair the event scheduled to hold on July 22, 2025, at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
While expressing his appreciation for the recognition, Senator Al-Makura described the media as the “watchdog of society and a critical partner in national development.”
He recalled his early beginnings in the media space as an Assistant Producer for News and Current Affairs at the defunct Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN), now the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
He commended the efforts of journalists in promoting justice and democratic values, stating that the media remains at the forefront of societal progress.
He also pledged his full support and unwavering commitment to advancing the journalism profession.
The Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, who led the delegation, praised Senator Al-Makura for his longstanding contributions to public service and democratic leadership.

Ike noted that his acceptance to chair the Press Week would inspire the media community and reemphasize the importance of a free and responsible press.
“This year’s Press Week is themed ‘Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and Society,’” Ike stated, adding that the event will spotlight the evolving landscape of journalism, the defence of press freedom, and the media’s role in strengthening democracy and promoting transparency.
The 2025 NUJ FCT Press Week is expected to attract top dignitaries, media professionals, and stakeholders from across the country.
