Kebbi gets first Naval Base to tackle riverine insecurity

In a significant move to enhance internal security and strengthen maritime surveillance, the Nigerian Navy is set to establish a fully operational naval base in Yauri, Kebbi State.

This development was announced on Thursday when a high-level naval delegation paid a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. The delegation was led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

According to Rear Admiral Nwatu, the planned naval base is a strategic expansion under the Navy’s evolving maritime doctrine, aimed at protecting inland waterways and tackling criminal activities along the River Niger corridor.

He emphasized that the initiative would bolster the Navy’s capacity to maintain a robust security presence in the region and support national efforts to ensure safe navigation and economic activities on Nigeria’s inland waters.

“River Niger, despite its immense contributions to agriculture, power, and livelihood, is increasingly being exploited by criminal elements for smuggling arms and other illicit activities.

“We have observed that the river is a major convergence route for such threats, which is why the Navy deems it necessary to extend its operations into Kebbi,” he said.

He added that the move would complement existing naval infrastructure in Niger State and help establish a robust security presence along the critical waterway that traverses much of Nigeria.

In his remarks, Idris welcomed the development, describing it as timely and strategic, especially in light of security challenges facing the southern part of the state.

“We have never had a naval base in Kebbi before, and we are grateful to the Chief of Naval Staff for this initiative,” the governor said.

“Given the border we share with Niger Republic and Benin Republic, and the increasing threats from trans-border banditry, we see this as a much-needed intervention.”

He also commended the Nigerian Navy for recognising the strategic importance of Yauri and assured the delegation of his administration’s full support.

“The state government will provide all necessary assistance, including temporary accommodation for immediate take-off, pending the construction of a permanent base,” Idris stated.

The governor further noted that while the marine police exist in the area, their numbers and resources are limited, making the Navy’s presence vital for safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and national assets.

The proposed base is expected to significantly strengthen the security architecture of the Northwest region, improve maritime policing, and deter criminal exploitation of inland waterways.
