The Kano State Government has inaugurated an 18-member committee under the Out-of-School Children Education Initiative to tackle the rising number of children who are not in school across the state.

This was contained in a statement by the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education, Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, noting that the inauguration was held on Monday at the office of the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda.

The initiative is part of the state’s renewed drive to ensure inclusive and quality education for every child.

Dr. Makoda explained that the committee’s focus is to identify children who have never been enrolled in school, as well as those who dropped out of the formal education system.

He added that their mandate includes expanding access to education, improving learning outcomes, and creating pathways for skills acquisition and future employment.

“The committee is expected to tackle the root causes of the problem by addressing poverty, reducing child labour, and enhancing community participation, while also providing a framework to overcome security challenges that hinder access to education,” he said.

The committee will be chaired by the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Education Reform, Haladu Muhammad, with membership drawn from government agencies, traditional institutions, academia, civil society groups, and development partners.

Speaking on behalf of the chairman, Umar Lawan, the State Lead of the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria Education (PLANE) supported by FCDO, assured of the committee’s readiness to deliver on its mandate and justify the confidence of the government.

Dr. Makoda further urged members to remain dedicated and ensure tangible progress in reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.
