FG to rebuild Lagos Airport, upgrade others in N987bn deal

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved contracts worth N987 billion for massive infrastructure upgrades at major airports across Nigeria, with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, receiving the largest share of the investment.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, after the FEC meeting held on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, and presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Keyamo revealed that the Lagos airport’s Terminal One will undergo full rehabilitation, as the facility will be completely stripped down to its structural frame and rebuilt to meet global standards.
“We have decided to strip it down to only the carcass, and then redo the entire mechanical and electrical systems,” he explained.
The project, estimated at N712.26 billion, will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund and executed by CCECC, the same contractor that built Terminal Two.
Terminal Two will also be expanded to include a new apron, access roads, bridges, and supporting infrastructure. Completion is expected in 22 months.
In addition to Lagos, Malam Aminu Kano International Airport will receive N46.39 billion for the rehabilitation of both runways and taxiways, along with the upgrade of airfield ground lighting to Category 2 (CAT 2) standards.
The project, scheduled for completion in 24 weeks, is designed to boost flight safety during poor weather, especially the harmattan season.
Keyamo also announced a major security upgrade at Lagos airport, involving the installation of a 14.6-kilometre perimeter fence equipped with CCTV cameras, solar-powered floodlights, intrusion detection systems, and patrol roads. The security project is valued at nearly N50 billion and will take 24 months to complete.
Port Harcourt International Airport is also set for runway and taxiway rehabilitation, including an upgrade of lighting systems to CAT 2 standards. This N42.14 billion project is aimed at enhancing operational safety and flight schedules during adverse weather.
