President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until August 2026.

Adeniyi, who was originally due to retire in August 2025, will now continue to lead the Service for an additional year.

The extension was announced on Wednesday through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the presidency, the decision was made to ensure the completion and consolidation of key reforms currently underway within the Nigeria Customs Service.

These reforms include the full modernisation of customs operations, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement read.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

Adeniyi was appointed acting Comptroller-General in June 2023, following the departure of Hameed Ali, and was officially confirmed in October 2023.

Since taking over, he has spearheaded various modernization initiatives aimed at boosting efficiency and accountability within the Customs Service.
