Awujale (Oba Adetona) buried in private ceremony as dignitaries pay respects

Oba Sikiru Adetona, the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has been buried at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The highly respected monarch, who passed away at the age of 91, was laid to rest on Monday in a private ceremony held according to Islamic rites.
The solemn event drew the presence of notable dignitaries, royal family members, and high chiefs from the Ijebu traditional council.
Among those who attended were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, business mogul Aliko Dangote, and renowned Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old, reigned for over six decades, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
His reign was widely praised for its combination of courage, modern leadership, and steadfast respect for Yoruba customs.
While the final burial rites were conducted privately, hundreds of Ijebu indigenes gathered across the town to honour a monarch they described as “fearless,” “principled,” and a “symbol of integrity.”
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was educated in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
His leadership of Ijebuland brought about significant development while preserving the cultural identity of his people.
President Bola Tinubu joined in paying tribute to the late monarch, describing his passing as “double pain,” as it coincided with the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his immediate predecessor.
The president hailed Oba Adetona as a towering figure who served his people with dignity, courage, and a clear sense of duty.
