UNIPORT immortalises Wike with arena naming at 50th Anniversary

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State has officially named its convocation arena after Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in recognition of his significant contributions to the institution’s development.
The arena was inaugurated on Saturday by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd), as part of activities marking the university’s 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony and its 50th Anniversary celebration.
UNIPORT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, acknowledged the historic transformation, noting that while the university’s first convocation in 1982 was held in an older venue, the new edifice, constructed during Wike’s tenure as governor, now stands as a monumental legacy.
In his remarks, Vice Admiral Ibas praised Wike for his visionary leadership, stating, “The ultra-modern convocation arena, now proudly inaugurated, is a testament to what is possible when vision is aligned with commitment.”
He added that the arena would serve not only as a convocation venue but also as a hub for policy dialogues, innovation exhibitions, and ceremonies that shape future leaders.
In response, Wike, who was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa), expressed profound gratitude to the university, stating, “My wife and entire family hold this honour as pre-eminent and totally gratifying. Our gratitude knows no bounds.”
Wike highlighted the pivotal role UNIPORT played in shaping his academic and political journey, describing the institution as the foundation of his character and learning.
He reaffirmed his commitment to giving back to his alma mater, saying, “This also explains why I freely give to this institution whenever I have the opportunity to do so.”
Other recipients of honorary doctorate degrees at the ceremony included Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu; Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri; and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
