President Bola Tinubu has nominated Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC), following the withdrawal of Professor Fatima Alkali from the role.

The president’s nomination was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.

Tinubu urged the Senate to confirm Yusuf’s appointment swiftly to facilitate a smooth transition in the commission’s leadership.

“I write to request the confirmation of the appointment of the commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission in accordance with the provisions of Section 2(1) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act 2022,” the letter read.

“I’m pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.”

The president clarified that Yusuf was nominated to replace Professor Fatima Alkali, who failed to appear for screening after her earlier nomination in June.

“Distinguished Senate President, distinguished senators, Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf is to replace Professor Fatima Alkali, whose nomination was earlier presented through my letter dated 22nd June 2025, but did not appear for screening and confirmation by the Senate,” Tinubu stated.

He also expressed hope that the Senate would give prompt approval to Yusuf’s nomination, reaffirming his highest regard for the lawmakers.

Senate President Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for further legislative action.

Recall that in June, Tinubu had nominated Professor Dakas Dakas as chairman of the NLRC, alongside Uchenna Okolocha and Fatima Alkali as commissioners.

However, Alkali, nominated to represent the North-East, declined the appointment, according to Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, during the presentation of the screening report.
