Press freedom is non-negotiable — NUJ FCT sends strong message

Over 200 journalists under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, staged a peaceful protest on Monday to demand press freedom, respect for human rights, and improved working conditions.
The protest, part of the 2025 Press Week celebrations, was tagged “Walk for Press Freedom.”
The demonstrators carried placards bearing messages like “Without a free press, truth is silenced,” “Press freedom protects our right to know,” and “Censorship kills democracy, defend press freedom.”
Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, addressed the crowd, describing the walk as a firm stand for democracy and truth.
She emphasized that press freedom is not up for debate, saying, “Today, we walk not just as journalists, but as defenders of democracy, truth, and media rights.
This is not symbolic, it is a strong reminder that journalism is a pillar of accountability and good governance.”
Ike stressed that suppressing the media harms society and buries the truth, asserting that journalism remains central to democracy and human rights.
She noted that this year’s Press Week theme, “Press Freedom, Democracy, Media and the Society”, reflects the media’s key role in national development.
In light of economic challenges and increasing threats against journalists, Ike encouraged her colleagues to resist censorship and intimidation.
She called on the government, civil society, and the public to support press freedom. She also urged for better welfare and professional recognition for journalists who risk their lives daily to keep the public informed.
“We must remain united in truth, uphold ethical standards, and reject misinformation while adapting responsibly to the changing media space. Our voices will not be silenced,” she declared.
Mrs Evelyn Onyilo, Chairperson of the Press Week Planning Committee, also warned that democracy cannot thrive without press freedom.
“We are amplifying our voices today to say press freedom must never be compromised. Those in power must see journalists not as adversaries but as partners in progress,” she said.
The Vice Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ndambabo Yahaya, added that press freedom is a fundamental right and the basis for all other freedoms. He urged the government and stakeholders to work together to uphold it.
