President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, recognizing his significant role in supporting his 2023 presidential victory.
Speaking at the 8th Day Fidau Prayer held in honour of the revered monarch at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu expressed deep gratitude for the Awujale’s unwavering support.
The event drew dignitaries including Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, as well as deputy governors from Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states, and former governors Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun.
The President also recalled the monarch’s bold stance during the June 12, 1993 political crisis, stating, “The Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you.”
Describing the Awujale as a symbol of integrity and a pride to the Yoruba race, Tinubu noted that Oba Adetona’s contributions have become an indelible part of Yoruba history.
He thanked God for the monarch’s long life, which spanned 91 years, and appreciated Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his consistent support and care for the late king.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun hailed the Awujale as a moral compass and a unifying figure who promoted religious harmony and made significant developmental strides in Ijebuland.
He lauded the monarch’s legacy as a defender of the less privileged and a cultural icon who uplifted his people.
