The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed ongoing efforts to bring back former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, into the party’s fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the party’s interest in reuniting with Obi.

“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back.”

“He is a very great capital for any political party, and any political party that will have him will be to their advantage,” Abdullahi said.

Obi, who ran as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections, parted ways with the party in 2022 to join the Labour Party, where he became the presidential candidate and contested in the 2023 polls.

Despite the challenges that characterized the electoral process, which Abdullahi referred to as “rigging and frustration,” Obi polled over six million votes and won in twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ultimately coming third behind APC’s Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.

“The truth of the matter is if he had not gone the way he did in the last dispensation and proved that mettle to generate over six million in spite of the rigging and frustration of his chances in many of the states, Peter Obi is truly a political capital, no doubt about it,” Abdullahi added.

Although Obi remains a member of the Labour Party, he has recently shown signs of collaboration with other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as part of a possible coalition.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who represented the PDP in the last two presidential elections, has officially resigned from the party.
