U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory condition that causes poor blood flow in the legs, the White House announced on Thursday.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the diagnosis during a briefing, noting that Trump, 79, had reported “mild swelling in his lower legs.”

Leavitt explained that the condition is relatively common, especially among individuals over 70 years of age.

According to Leavitt, Trump underwent several medical examinations, including a complete blood count, metabolic panel, and coagulation profile. She said all test results were “encouraging.”

“Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease,” she said, quoting a letter from Trump’s physician.

“An echocardiogram also confirmed normal cardiac structure and function. There were no signs of heart failure, kidney damage, or any systemic illness.”

Leavitt said Trump directed her to release the health update publicly “in the effort of transparency.”

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in leg veins weaken or are damaged, causing blood to flow backward and pool in the legs instead of returning to the heart.

While the condition can lead to symptoms such as swelling, cramps, skin discoloration, or ulcers if left untreated, it is generally not considered life-threatening.

Leavitt also responded to public concerns about photos showing discolouration on the back of Trump’s hand.

She said the marks were due to minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshakes and daily aspirin use, part of his cardiovascular health routine.

“This is a well-known and benign side effect of aspirin therapy,” she said.

“The president remains in excellent health, as I believe you all witness daily.”

Trump, who became the oldest U.S. president at the time of his inauguration in January, had consistently criticized then-President Joe Biden, now 82, over age and fitness during the 2024 campaign.

However, Trump eventually dropped out of the race following a widely criticized debate performance that raised questions about his alertness.
