Gov. Otu appoints Prof. Francisca Bassey as UNICROSS Vice-Chancellor

Professor Francisca Bassey has been appointed as the first substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), marking a historic milestone for the institution.
The appointment was confirmed by the Cross River State Government following the approval of Governor Bassey Otu.
The announcement was made public in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan-Enoh, on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
According to the statement, her selection was based on the recommendation of the university’s governing council after a transparent and rigorous selection process.
Daily Watch Nigeria report that Professor Bassey, a distinguished academic, researcher, and administrator, becomes the first woman to occupy the office since the institution transitioned into a full-fledged university.
Describing her as a scholar with integrity and experience, the statement noted, “Professor Bassey, a seasoned academic and administrator of distinction, brings to the role a wealth of experience, integrity, and a deep commitment to advancing higher education.”
It further emphasized the government’s confidence in merit-based leadership and the empowerment of qualified Cross Riverians, adding, “Her emergence reflects the administration’s abiding faith in meritocracy and the empowerment of capable Cross Riverians to drive institutional growth and excellence.”
Governor Otu congratulated Professor Bassey on her elevation and urged her to provide visionary leadership that will transform UNICROSS into a center of academic innovation and excellence.
He also assured her of the state government’s full support as she takes on the role.
An alumna of the University of Calabar, Professor Bassey has over 30 years of experience in teaching, research, and university administration.
She has held various key academic positions, including Head of Department, Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Her scholarly work spans several peer-reviewed journals and policy discussions, particularly in the social sciences.
Prior to her appointment, she served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor and assumes this substantive role at a time when UNICROSS is expanding its academic programmes and infrastructural footprint.
