Late Former President, Mohammadu Buhari

A special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari will now take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the presidency has announced.

The tribute session, to be presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was initially scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, but was postponed due to the overlap with funeral arrangements in Buhari’s hometown of Daura, Katsina State, as well as the declaration of a public holiday to mark the national mourning.

President Tinubu had earlier directed that Nigerian flags be flown at half-staff for seven days to honour the country’s former leader, describing Buhari’s contributions as “towering and deeply significant.”

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency confirmed that the special FEC meeting will now hold by 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The revised schedule was also shared via Onanuga’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he posted: “A special session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held on Thursday 17 July from 1pm.”

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the session of tributes for the departed leader.”

The Federal Government had earlier declared Tuesday a public holiday in honour of the late president, whose remains arrived Nigeria on Tuesday morning for final burial rites.

Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in a London hospital following a prolonged illness.

He was buried in his country home in Daura with a state burial.
