Troops eliminates top Boko Haram leader, others in Lake Chad

Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have killed a notorious Boko Haram commander, Amir Dumkei, along with five other insurgents during a fierce encounter in the Lake Chad region.
This was made known in a statement issued on Wednesday by the MNJTF spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, who said the troops repelled an attempted attack by ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists on a military base on Koulfoua Island in the early hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The terrorists were met with heavy resistance and superior firepower from the MNJTF forces, resulting in the neutralisation of their commander and five fighters, while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

“Through intense artillery and coordinated bombardments, the terrorist commander was neutralised along with five others, while the remaining terrorists fled with gunshot wounds,” the statement read.
He added that nine AK-47 rifles, three boats, and a large cache of ammunition were recovered during the operation.
Osoba said clearance operations are currently ongoing as troops continue the pursuit of fleeing insurgents to fully secure the area.
The Force Commander, Major General Godwin Mutkut, commended the troops for their commitment and resilience in the fight against terrorism and reaffirmed the MNJTF’s dedication to maintaining peace and security in the Lake Chad basin.
