Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with a host of prominent Nigerian political leaders, converged on Daura, Katsina State, on Wednesday to attend the Fidau prayer for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently in London and was buried on Tuesday.

Among those present were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as well as former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Also in attendance were Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and former Katsina Governor Aminu Bello Masari.

Other dignitaries included NDLEA boss Buba Marwa, the Emir of Daura HRH Faruk Umar Faruk, former Chief of Army Staff Yusuf Tukur Buratai, former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, and ex-Digital Economy Minister Aliyu Isah Pantami.

Also in attendance were Senator Abdul Aziz Yar’adua, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, ex-NIA Director General Ahmad Rufa’i, and Katsina State Deputy Governor Faruk Jobe.

The Fidau prayer, held at about 12:34pm and led by Imam Yazid, featured Qur’anic recitations, prayers, and charitable acts performed on behalf of the late president.

Attendees prayed for Allah’s mercy upon Buhari’s soul, seeking his admittance into Aljanna Firdausi. They also prayed for peace in Nigeria and for relief from rising food prices.

Fidau, an Islamic prayer tradition, is typically held on the 3rd, 8th, 40th, or 100th day after a person’s death, as well as on anniversaries, to ask Allah’s forgiveness for the deceased and continue good deeds in their name.

Speaking after the prayers, Vice President Shettima urged Nigerians to reflect on their mortality, describing life as a journey with everyone destined to return to their Creator.

He described Buhari’s death as a loss not just for Daura or Nigeria, but for the entire African continent.

“We will come tomorrow at the same time for yet another prayer of this type. The Governor of Katsina will also be here in the next one week so also the family of the late President,” Shettima added.
