Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran, has passed away at the age of 70.

The news was confirmed by movie executive and producer Seun Oloketuyi in an Instagram post on Friday, stating that the actor died earlier in the day.

He wrote, “Popular actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief Kanran died Friday morning. Details soon.”

Chief Kanran was a celebrated figure in the Yoruba film industry, admired for his unique style, elegance, love for luxury, sharp humour, and commanding performances that lit up stage plays and movies for decades.

In a 2020 interview with Journalists, he spoke about his struggles and reasons for stepping away from filmmaking.

He said, “I stepped aside from film-making because of some reasons. There is politics everywhere and different cliques as well, even in our profession.”

He began his career on stage before transitioning to television and film, appearing in numerous Yoruba stage productions and gaining recognition through a popular NTA drama series.

His fame grew further with his roles in Yoruba movies.

He was particularly known for playing authoritative roles such as kings, chiefs, or village elders.

As of now, the cause of Chief Kanran’s death has not been disclosed, and the family has yet to make a formal announcement regarding burial arrangements.
