President Bola Tinubu has directed the swift implementation of a free healthcare programme for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), Daily Watch Nigeria reports.

This order came after he was briefed by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the healthcare plan as a vital part of ensuring social protection and dignity for retirees.

Alongside the healthcare directive, Tinubu also ordered the immediate enforcement of delayed pension increases and the activation of a minimum pension guarantee. These steps aim to strengthen the safety net for vulnerable pensioners enrolled in the CPS.

During the briefing, the President further instructed PenCom to urgently address the longstanding issue of police pensions. He stressed the importance of honouring the service of officers who have dedicated their lives to protecting the country.

Ms. Oloworaran also presented other planned initiatives, including strategies to preserve the real value of pension funds in the face of inflation and a proposal to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to pension accounts in foreign currency.

President Tinubu expressed his full support for the ongoing pension reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s focus on inclusive development and protection for everyday Nigerians.
