The Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Alhaji Ahmed Makama Hardawa, has died after a brief illness.

He passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Abuja.

Alhaji Hardawa was a former Resident Electoral Commissioner with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), having served in Taraba and Nasarawa States.

In a condolence message released on Wednesday, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the veteran public servant.

The statement, signed by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, described the late Hardawa as a “distinguished statesman, an accomplished public servant, and a patriotic Nigerian,” whose legacy of integrity and service spanned decades.

Governor Mohammed noted that Hardawa’s tenure as BASIEC Chairman was marked by dedication to credible electoral processes and grassroots democratic development.

“He played a critical role in deepening democratic governance at the grassroots through the promotion of transparent and credible electoral processes,” the governor stated.

He added that Hardawa’s life was defined by “wisdom, humility, and exemplary leadership,” and that his contributions would be sorely missed at a time when Nigeria’s democracy is still evolving.

The governor extended condolences to Hardawa’s immediate family, the BASIEC team, his friends and associates, as well as the people of Hardawa and the Misau Emirate Councils.
