Former Kano State Governor and NNPP chieftain, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the President’s official residence in Abuja.

The meeting, which followed Kwankwaso’s attendance at the Nigeria Forest Economy Summit 2025 held at the State House Conference Centre, marks their second publicly known engagement in just over two years.

Their last encounter occurred on June 9, 2023, shortly after Tinubu’s inauguration, when Kwankwaso became the first opposition presidential candidate to visit the newly sworn-in president.

At the time, Kwankwaso told reporters their discussion centred on politics and governance, though he gave no further details.

Monday’s meeting, which was not open to the media, comes at a politically significant time, as the African Democratic Congress recently announced a broad coalition to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso, 67, remains a key northern political figure and founder of the influential “Kwankwasiyya” movement.

He served two terms as Kano governor, was Defence Minister under President Obasanjo, and was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in 2023, finishing fourth nationwide but securing a sweeping victory in Kano.

Though the NNPP is not officially part of the emerging ADC-led opposition coalition, efforts have reportedly been made to bring Kwankwaso on board in the bid to unify opposition forces ahead of the next election cycle.

Presidency sources did not disclose the details of Monday’s conversation, noting only that it was held privately at the President’s residence and was inaccessible to most aides.
